Recent violent confrontations between regional student groups at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), Waigani campus, have provoked widespread public concern and disappointment.

UPNG has long been respected as a leading institution in higher education and a symbol of intellectual leadership, national consciousness, and academic excellence.

Its students were once united on national issues and demanded accountability through peaceful action.

Recent violence is a worrying deviation from this legacy.

Disputes must be resolved through dialogue and established student leadership structures, not confrontation.

Future leaders must reject violence, maintain discipline, and restore the unity, respect, and dignity that the university represents.
